There seems to be a lot of confusion about the craft. I have found that actors are thinking about the craft while they are doing a scene. For example, the actor is thinking about his objective after “Action” is called. Well, then you are no longer present in the scene with your scene partner.
The craft is to be used in preparation. It allows you to take ownership of the circumstances and slide into the middle of them. Once you have fully prepared, it is time to play; to allow yourself to be open and moved by what is happening and available around you.
It is not interesting to watch actors “working”. Ultimately, it is the sharing of your humanity that moves us.
